Chapter 1: Jim Gallien picked up Chris who was hitchhiking. Chris said that his name is Alex. He claimed that he was from South Dakota. He needed a ride as far into Denali as Gallien could go; then he would live off the wild. Gallien would constantly try to pry Chris out of going into the wild but Chris, being stubborn, refused to turn around. All Chris had was a .22 caliber rifle, boots that were not insulated well and not water proof, and a 10 pound bag of rice. Gallien said that the hinting isn't that great. He offered to take Chris back to a store to get real supplies and gear but Chris refused. Gallien took Chris as far as he could go on the Stampede Trail. Gallien gave him better boots, his lunch, and his number so that Chris could call him if he came out alive.
Chapter 2: In 1961, a company, Yutan Construction, bought some land and they started building on it. They had three old city buses with beds and stoves. Eventually the company stopped and left one of the buses there. Ever since, hunters would venture up to the bus for shelter. The area nearby would be full of animals around that time of year. In early September of 1992, six people from different groups visited the bus on the same day. Thompson, Samuel, and Swanson were well prepared; they took ATV's, trucks, dynamite, and other gear needed for survival. Even with all the equipment, they had difficulty getting to the bus. When they arrived, they found two people in shock. On the bus was a letter from Chris asking for help and saying that he was in danger. Samuel went up to the bus and found Chris dead in the sleeping bag. The next day, troopers came to pick him up. Chris died of starvation. When they weighed his body, he was 67 pounds. The body was so deformed that they didn't know who he was. All they had was his signature and the pictures.
Chapter 3: Chris met Wayne Westerberg in Carthage, South Dakota. Wayne picked Chris up the one day on the way to pick up a part for a combine since he worked at a grain elevator. Chris said that his name was Alex McCandless. Wayne took Chris home and gave him dinner. Chris spent several days there and then he left. Wayne offered him a job at the grain elevator and several weeks later, Chris came back. Chris was said to be one of the hardest workers. He would always finish a job no matter how hard and dirty that job was. Wayne was arrested by the FBI since he was caught selling black boxes. Although Chris liked Carthage he left.
In1990, Chris graduated. His parents offered him anew car and money for law school. He'd rather have his old Datsun and then he donated his money to OXFAM America which is a group that fights hunger. Before he went on his journey, he went home in Annandale to visit his parents. He had an apartment in Atlanta. His parents went to visit but he moved out five weeks before. He changed his name to Alexander Supertramp.
Chapter 4: The National Park Service Rangers found Chris' Datsun abandoned near Lake Mead. Chris arrived there July 6. He ignored the signs and went off road for 2 miles. There was a flash flood and he was only able to save several belongings. He burned his money. He walked around the lake and went west. He got a job from Crazy Ernie but since he didn't get paid, he stole a bike and went to Arcata, California. He stayed with Han and Bob Burres who were rubber tramps. They say he was a nice kid.
Walt and Billie, Chris' parents, hired Kalitka who worked for the DIA and CIA.
Chris got a canoe and paddled down Colorado River and the Gulf of California in Mexico. HE traveled soth through confusing canals. Then his oars broke so he stopped southeast of El Golfo de Santa Clara and headed back up. He did not talk or see anyone for 36 days. He lost 25 pounds and survived on 5 pounds of rice. Even though he suffered physically, his morality soared. He crossed the border and got a job in Vegas. He left onto road again and his camera was damaged.
Chapter 5: Chris stopped writing in his journal for a while. He went back and forth and then arrived in Bullhead City, Arizona. It was a civilized city and Chris got a job at McDonald's. This was the longest he stopped anywhere after Atlanta. He really liked the place and he thought of staying. He got a mobile home from Charlie. Chris leaves. He goes back with the Burres and stays at a place called the Slabs. Chris helps Jan sell stuff. Tracy got a crush on Chris. Chris leaves. and hand gave him Swiss knives and pocket knives.
